Journey
of a Family Chapter
10: January - Aug 1987
_ |
After seventeen years of ministry as rector
of St. Catherine's Archdeacon Ian Grant left the parish in January
1987. He and Carol had lived most of their married life in British
Columbia and when they arrived at St. Catherine's in 1970 their
daughter Jennifer was a tiny girl. Their son Jamie was born
in August that year. It was with mixed emotions that Ian accepted
the invitation from St. George's Church in London, Ontario,
to become their rector. He had guided St. Catherine's through
many joyful, rewarding and occasionally controversial times
(enough to make his hair curl!). He left St. Catherine's a better
place for sharing his ministry.
The parish then entered a hiatus of eight months, during which
Pastoral Associate Heather Luccock continued to provide pastoral
care, educational programs, baptismal preparation and taught
a large confirmation class. Phoebe Stenson handled the administration
and the Eucharists were celebrated by either Archbishop David
Somerville or visiting clergy. It was a compliment to Ian's
guidance that the keen lay leadership was so well equipped to
carry on. Also, during the Spring the Christian Education Committee
organized a parish retreat at Camp Chehalis near Harrison Hot
Springs. The theme was "Life Together" and was led
by the Reverend and Mrs. Dirk Rinehart. That was the first of
three annual equally successful parish retreats at Camp Chehalis.
