St.
Catherine’s (Capilano) Church came full circle on
Sunday, June 1, 2008
as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the parish. Our worship
started outdoors around the memorial garden, to remember some
of our founding pioneers whose first service on the site was
also al fresco. As the opening prayers were said, a vocal
flock of geese flew overhead, its V-shaped formation a reminder
of how far we can travel when we work together and each take
turns in leadership positions!

The
service was interspersed with wonderful choir anthems, prayers
of blessing focusing on the different aspects of our church
ministry, and a sermon preached by the Venerable Ronald Harrison
in which we were called to be ‘living stones’
who put our faith into action.
After
church, we were entertained, educated and enlightened by a
marvellous ‘Wing and a Prayer’ production in which
parish adults and children walked us through sixty years of
St. Catherine’s history, from the earliest days, through
‘old school’ vs. ‘new school’ struggles,
to the church we are today—the common theme through
the ages being a roof in constant need of repair!
Thanks
to script writer and director Billy Garton and to production
whizzes Rhonda Garton, Tony Dodd and Brenda MacDonald. The
performance received a standing ovation, the audience received
birthday cake (thank you, Phoebe!), and a marvellous time
was had by all.
