Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Community Thanksgiving Dinner
Saturday, October 7, 2006

This was a Thanksgiving Dinner for people of the North Shore who do not have the luxury of participating in a traditional family thanksgiving. We distributed invitations to various Social Service Agencies who offered them to the people they assist. We welcomed almost 100 guests for dinner.

Thank you to all of you who donated food and labour for cooking, serving, setting up, and cleaning up. Your response was incredible!

Some of the helpers who made it so successful.

Over 50 of our young people came to act as servers and to make our guests feel truly welcome.

Nearly 200 lbs of turkey were cooked and carved by St. Catherine's members; a *bathtub's worth of the absolute best gravy was provided; not to mention the *mountains of turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, veg, homemade cranberry sauce, or the *billion buns. The pie tables had a *gazillion pies...
there was so much, and it was all used.

Extra dinners were made up in takeaway containers for each guest to take home after the meal and the remaining food was distributed to various agencies.

Restraint against the background of fabulous smells was a bit hard to exercise, but no-one who volunteered to help actually sat down to eat the food that was prepared for our guests. (Although I am told that a teeny amount of pie may have accidentally slipped between a few St. Catherine's teeth.)

Roland (Lounge Lizard) Walker tinkled the ivories and provided the musical ambience; Siiri's Junior Choir sang beautifully, the place mats created by Pre-School children were in Autumn colours, the tables were decorated in full Autumn colour and our new Rector Christine Rowe provided the greeting and grace. It was wonderful to see the congregation of St. Catherine's come together and put on such an event.

What a wonderful successful evening. Thanks to Brenda Stenson and Heather Peacock for the original idea and for the expert planning and efforts to carry it all out so smoothly.

We anticipate that next year, the word will spread on the street that St. Catherine's throws a great Thanksgiving Celebration !
