Welcome to St. Catherine's!

Welcome to St. Catherine's!

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Dear family of Christ,

It is fitting that we’ll take up the topic of rest, “sabbathing”, and wholeness this Sunday in relation to our Gospel reading, when this week has been so busy here at St. Catherine’s:

  • We’ve begun the annual end-of-summer “Big Clean”, and Ashkon Vahedi has been the King of the Powerwasher, making concrete sparkle again…. and getting regularly drenched in the process. Thank you!
  • The first “Conversation with Rev. Sarah” gathered on Tuesday to share ideas, learn obscure facts about yours truly, and share what we love most about St. Catherine’s. Deep thanks to Alistair Peacock for representing the Property Development Committee to keep all abreast of developments and direction. Lots of food for thought -- and delicious food for eating. Thank you, Natasha Stegmann for organizing and Ashkon (again) for help with set up/break down. The last conversation circle will gather after coffee hour this Sunday – please join us even if you haven’t RSVPed.
  • Communication specialist, Kingsley Genaille, is in Saskatoon as I type (fingers crossed for Air Canada flights), accompanying a group from St. Mary’s Kerrisdale to CLAY 2025, the Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth Gathering. This is Kingsley’s last hurrah for St. Mary’s, as they shift focus to studies at VST this fall and St. Catherine’s communications. We hold Kingsley and all gathered at CLAY in our prayers for a fruitful time of connection and inspiration and for the space to make the mental shift to the new cycle of the academic year.
  • And… I’ve been lining up supply clergy through December. I’m happy to announce that St. Catherine’s will celebrate Holy Communion again every Sunday from starting in September. I look forward to introducing you to Fr. José Luís Aranda, the Ven. Dr. Rob James, and welcoming back Rev. Margaret Marquardt and Rev. Sharon Salomons for some “guest appearances” too.

In Christ and in community,

Rev. Sarah

Spiritual Formation: Take This Bread by Sara Miles

Spiritual Formation: Take This Bread by Sara Miles

Tuesdays 7pm on Zoom Sept. 16, 23, and 30

Register online to receive the Zoom link

We'll take up a contemporary spiritual memoir in September, reading Sara Miles' fabulous Take This Bread. Paperbacks are available at the church office (by donation). It's also available as an audiobook on Audible ($.99 with your membership, for a limited time).

Sara Miles is a former war correspondent, cook, and atheist, whose life took a dramatic turn when she wandered into a San Francisco church one day, received communion, and found her life transformed — embracing a faith that she'd once scorned.

Sara Miles will give the 2025 public lecture at the Vancouver School of Theology on the evening of Thursday, October 2nd, plus a workshop the following day. We'll organize a carpool to attend (or watch via livestream) to cap off our discussions.
