Welcome to St. Catherine's!
Alleluia, the Strife is Over! I had to smile at the opening words of our first hymn on Easter Sunday! Holy Week and Easter can sometimes feel like too much, too fast, too soon, especially if you are involved in planning and organizing all the services that happen. But all went well, and we can actually now say, Alleluia, Christ is risen! Indeed. So, a big “Thank You” to everyone involved, too many to mention all by name, the altar guild for all the practical details to do with the various services, and everyone who participated in leading, reading, praying, or any aspects of the services. Your participation is very much appreciated by everyone, not least me! This Sunday, April 27, we continue our journey through the Easter season with readings from Acts and Revelation, giving insights into the life of the early church. Our psalm is a song of praise, glorifying God with the sound of many musical instruments, and our gospel reading brings us back to the day of Jesus’s resurrection, in the evening, when Jesus appeared to the disciples gathered again in the upper room. But Thomas, like us, was not there when Jesus came, and could not take the other disciples’ word for it. So, Jesus graciously appears again a week later, when Thomas is with them all. Thomas is blown away! “My Lord and my God,” he says. And Jesus asks, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet come to believe.” That’s us, surely. We have not seen with our eyes, nor touched with our hands, and yet we have come to believe. This always brings me back to the question of why, then, do I believe? What is it that causes me to build my life on the foundation of this belief? There are many ways each of us could begin to answer that question. I think, in one way or another, it comes down to the difference we see that it makes in the lives of believers, my own and others. It’s not about an abstract intellectual belief, but rather is a trust built on the experience of our lives and those around us, and finds expression in the fruit of our lives, the fruit of love, joy, and peace. Faith feeds faith, it seems to me. Many things challenge our faith, yet here we are, still talking about Jesus just the same, and Jesus continues to speak to us. This Sunday, we look forward to welcoming Beth Bailey, who is the Children’s Ministry Coordinator at St. Clement’s Church in Lynn Valley and who will be sharing about this important work in our deanery with us. I look forward to seeing everyone who can be present in person and welcoming those who will join us via livestream. Finally, don’t forget to VOTE if you haven’t already done so. Elbows up, Canada! Easter Blessings+ Angus

You're Invited to attend!Ending Poverty Together Workshop Saturday, May 3rd, 2025 Register to attend in-person by emailing: Register to attend online, via this link. ______ The Greater Vancouver branch of the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN) invite you to join them in an interactive workshop on Ending Poverty Together, facilitated by Food for the Hungry. Poverty is at the heart of many of the issues on which GRAN works – child hunger, health inequity. This workshop is an opportunity to join with like-minded individuals to examine poverty in new ways, both root causes and solutions. While Food for the Hungry operates within a biblical worldview, we emphasise that the workshop is for people of all faiths or no faith, and that the focus is on exploring a community development approach to addressing poverty. |
